PepsiCo pulled off one of the most creative snack moves of the year by taking three of its biggest chip brands — Lay's, Doritos, and Cheetos — and swapping their signature flavors across formats. The result is a trio of products that probably shouldn't work but absolutely do: Cool Ranch Doritos Ruffles, Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream Doritos, and Lay's Sweet Southern Heat BBQ Cheetos.

The concept sounds like something dreamed up during a brainstorming session that went a little too long, but credit where it's due — PepsiCo took a genuine creative risk here. Each product takes a beloved flavor from one brand and applies it to the format of another, creating something familiar yet disorienting in the best way possible. Cool Ranch seasoning on Ruffles' ridged chips? It hits different. Cheetos' Southern Heat BBQ on a flat Lay's chip? Surprisingly natural.

It's the snack equivalent of a DJ mashup — you know both songs, but hearing them together is brand new.

The launch dropped in January 2026 and was positioned as a limited-time offering, though PepsiCo has been cagey about exactly how limited. The company has a history of using limited runs to test demand before committing to permanent shelf space, and the social media engagement around the flavor swaps suggests they've got a hit on their hands.

What's most interesting about this move is the strategic implication. PepsiCo owns all three brands, which means they could theoretically keep remixing flavors across their portfolio indefinitely. If the swap concept proves durable, we could see Tostitos with Doritos Cool Ranch seasoning, SunChips with Cheetos dust, or any number of combinations that leverage PepsiCo's massive flavor library against its equally massive format library.

All three flavor swap products are available at Target and other major retailers now. Grab them before they're gone — or before PepsiCo gets even weirder with the next round.
